My latest mistake By Ontravel Ontravel Crossing to China has become that familiar that this time I have tried to pack light. Usually, I always bring two guides: my old Let's Go China - which is great, but pretty old now...(see: it is a very long time it has not been updated) and the latest edition of Lonely Planet China. But this time, I thought that, first, it was pretty heavy, second, the new edition of Lonely Planet China was much better than the previous. Yet it was a big mistake. Why? Because Lonely Planet (this appreciation is relevant to their China guide only!) doesn't actually allow you to travel off the beaten paths. Indeed, there are big "holes": two many places are missing, which means it is very hard to build you own non-usual itinerary based only on this book. It is all the more true for non Chinese speaking travellers. Thus, you still need both. I will take both next time for sure!
